They play a vital role by drawing water from the ground and releasing it into the atmosphere as vapor through tiny pores in their leaves, a process known as transpiration. This not only contributes to global temperature regulation but also influences rainfall patterns worldwide.

Trees and forests are crucial in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters such as floods and landslides. Their intricate root systems act like filters, removing pollutants and slowing the absorption of water into the soil. A single tree’s daily transpiration can have a cooling effect equivalent to running two domestic air conditioners for a full day. This highlights the significant impact trees have on our environment, particularly in conserving water—an element essential to all life on Earth.

Water is fundamental to survival and the health of all living creatures, including humans. Trees are key players in maintaining water cycles and ensuring a reliable water supply. Whether in forests or as individual stands, preserving tree cover is crucial for maintaining water resources, directly impacting the quantity, quality, and filtration of water.

Trees manage the water cycle by regulating rainfall, water evaporation, and the flow of water through the environment. But how exactly do they help conserve water and ensure its availability on Earth?

For islands like Bonaire, this sediment runoff can have devastating effects, extending beyond the land and into the surrounding coral reefs. Sediment can smother coral, block sunlight, and inhibit the growth of these vital ecosystems. While planting new trees is beneficial, the protection of mature trees is far more critical (*).
